Wondering how to make your home more energy-efficient? Learn how to conserve energy and reduce costs with these expert tips.
1. Seal and Insulate
Heating and cooling costs account for 45% of the average home's energy usage. Seal gaps and cracks in your attic, basement, and around windows and doors. Ensure your home insulation levels meet or exceed local codes.
2. Buy Energy-Efficient Appliances
Look for the Energy Star label when shopping for home items. Over 40 product categories feature this label, including major appliances and light fixtures.
3. Get Tax Credits
Maximize savings and get a tax credit for using Energy Star windows, skylights, storm doors, or adding home insulation, weather stripping, or caulk.
4. Landscape to Save Energy
Plant deciduous trees on the south and west sides of your house. In summer, the leaves will shade your house; in winter, the bare branches will let the sun through for added warmth.
5. Add a Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans are economical and efficient, using about the same energy as a 100-watt light bulb. In summer, set your fan to spin counterclockwise and set your thermostat a few degrees higher. In winter, switch the blades to spin clockwise to save on heating costs.
6. Monitor Appliance Energy Use
Use a Watts-Up or Kill-a-Watt meter to determine how much power your appliances use and identify energy hogs.
7. Use Outdoor CFLs
Switch to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) for outdoor lighting. Divide the wattage of the incandescent bulb by four to determine the CFL wattage needed.
8. Modify Your Lighting
Replace your home's five most frequently used light fixtures or bulbs with Energy Star-qualified models to save about $60 each year in energy costs. Start with outdoor porch lights, the kitchen ceiling fixture, living room lamps, and bathroom vanity lights.
9. Change Least-Used Lightbulbs
Downgrade 100-watt bulbs in closets or guest bedrooms to 60-watt or even 40-watt bulbs to conserve energy.
10. Install a Dimmer Switch
A dimmer switch allows you to reduce lighting when you don't need it, and occupancy sensors turn lights off after you leave a room.
11. Install Skylights
Use daylight whenever possible. Install skylights in rooms with no windows to reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day.
12. Optimize Exterior Lighting
Motion sensors for exterior lighting save energy and provide affordable security that never rests.
13. Think Long-Term
Energy-efficient appliances may cost more up front, but they will pay for themselves over time through energy savings.
14. Paint Light Colors
Light paint colors on walls and ceilings reflect more light, making rooms brighter and reducing the need for high-wattage light bulbs.
15. Wash with Cold Water
Use cold water and cold-water detergent for laundry to save energy and costs associated with heating water.
16. Dry Full Loads
Maximize your laundry dryer's efficiency by using its full load capacity. This reduces the number of cycles needed and conserves energy.
17. Air-Dry Dishes
Skip the heat-dry setting on your dishwasher and opt for air-drying to save energy.
18. Match Pans to Burners
Using a 6-inch pot on an 8-inch stove burner wastes over 40% of the burner's heat. Match pan size to burner size to save energy.
19. Program Your Thermostat
A programmable thermostat can save you over $100 annually by reducing unnecessary heating or cooling when you're away from home or sleeping.
20. Maintain Equipment
Have a licensed expert check your heating and cooling systems annually. Proper maintenance ensures efficient operation and can prevent costly repairs. Regularly replace your air filter as well.
Implement these simple yet effective tips to enhance your home's energy efficiency, reduce costs, and contribute to a sustainable lifestyle.
